Gomes nets game-best 26 points for Falcons in non-conference setback

Bennington, Vt. – The Fitchburg State University men's basketball team suffered a tough 90-89 setback to the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont in non-conference action this evening at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.

How It Happened

The Falcons were paced by junior guard Jerrell Gomes (Providence, R.I.), who posted a game-best 26 points, one rebound, two assists, two steals and two blocks, while classmate Jonathan Perez (Lowell, Mass.) netted 20 points, five caroms, three assists and one steal. Junior Brandon Harris (San Bernardino, Calif.) was also solid for the Green and Gold, finishing with 12 points, six boards, three assists and one steal.

For the Mountaineers, senior center Claude Payne (South Plainfield, N.J.) registered a team-best 22 points and seven rebounds, while senior Mike Pierre (Melrose, N.Y.) chipped in with 17 points, six boards, one assist and two steals. Sophomore Tyler McLeod (Auburn, N.Y.) added a double-double of 16 points and ten boards as well as three assists, two steals and one block.

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State shot 33-for-62 (53.2%) from the field and (10-of-25) 40.0% from beyond the arc.

Southern Vermont went 28-for-70 (40.0%) overall and (7-of-23) 30.4% from three point range.

The Mountaineers controlled the boards, holding a 46-26 margin on the glass, while the Falcons held a 26-25 margin in bench points.

Just third ever meeting between the two schools on the basketball court with the Falcons 1-2 all-time when taking on the Mountaineers.

Fitchburg State won the last meeting with Southern Vermont, registering a 71-66 victory last season (1/7/17) at the Parkinson Gymnasium
