Perez nets game-best 28 points to lead Fitchburg State to non-conference victory 

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University men's basketball team defeated the Cougars of Clark University, 90-70 in non-conference action this evening at the Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

The two teams traded baskets over the first 11 minutes of play before the Falcons went on an 11-0 run, highlighted by three pointers from freshman Brandon Guerrero (Corona, Calif.) and junior Jonathan Perez (Lowell, Mass.) to take a 33-22 margin.

Clark cut into the deficit (33-26) following a jumper by freshman Tyler Danvern (Webster, Mass.) before the Green and Gold closed out the half with a trey from Perez and  a layup by junior Jerrell Gomes (Providence, R.I.) to take a 45-30 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the Falcons extended its lead (58-32) on three pointer by sophomore Tyrell St. John (Stamford, Conn.), but the Cougars battled back, going on a 13-1 run midway through the frame as junior Luca McCormick (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) collected six points, while Davern chipped in with five points to make the score 64-54.

The hosts secured its third win on the year as junior Joshawa Babb (Lynn, Mass.) sank a pair of free-throws, while classmate Dante Ramos (Miami, Fla.) connected on a layup, resulting in the 90-70 final.

Inside the Numbers,

For the Green and Gold, Perez finished with a game-best 28 points and eight caroms, while senior Troy DaCosta (Cambridge, Mass.), Gomez and Guerrero added 12 points each.

Clark was paced by Davern with a team-best 17 points and three boards, while McCormick chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds.

Fitchburg State shot 37-for-79 (46.8%) from the field and (7-of-21) 33.3% from beyond the arc.

Clark went 25-for-72 (34.7%) overall and (3-of-24) 12.5% from three point range.

The Falcons controlled the boards, holding a 55-38 margin on the glass, while the converted 15 turnovers into 17 points on the offensive end.

15th meeting between the two schools on the hardwood with the Falcons 5-10 all-time when taking on the Cougars.

Fitchburg State has won three for the last four contests against Clark.
