Gomes, Perez and Tracy reach double figures for Fitchburg State

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University men's basketball team dropped an 85-63 decision to the Engineers of MIT in non-conference action this afternoon at the Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

MIT took a 10-6 lead early in the contest as freshman forward Hamilton Forsythe (Weston, Mass.) sparked the Engineers with five of the ten points, while junior Cameron Korb (Los Gatos, Calif.) drained a three pointer.

Fitchburg State responded, knotting the score at 15-15 on a treys from sophomore Nicholas Tracy (Indianapolis, Ind.) and junior Jonathan Perez (Lowell, Mass.). The Engineers extended their lead (29-19) as freshman Ian Hinkley (Raleigh, N.C.) sank a three pointer before the Falcons cut the deficit to five on a layup by sophomore Tyrell St. John (Stamford, Conn.) to make the score 43-38 going into the break.

Following the intermission, MIT upped its margin (50-38) on a three pointer from Korb, while junior Bradley Jomard (Paris, France) and sophomore Aidan Einloth (Grayslake, Ill.). Fitchburg State answered back on buckets by junior Jerrell Gomes (Providence, R.I.) and classmate Charlie Ollis (Mobile, Ala.) to cut the lead to 58-42.

The Engineers secured its ninth win on the season, going on 16-2 run midway through the second frame as Korb netted six points, while Jomard added five points for MIT (85-63), en-route to the 85-63 final.

Inside the Numbers,

Fitchburg State was led by Gomes with a team-leading 18 points and three boards, while Perez added 15 points and five rebounds.

For MIT, Forsythe finished with a game-best 23 points and two caroms, while Korb chipped in with 20 points and four boards.

Fitchburg State shot 19-for-52 (36.5%) from the field and (4-of-15) 26.7% from beyond the arc.

MIT went 29--for-52 (56.9%) overall and (11-of-21) 52.4% from three point range.

Both teams finished with 31 rebounds and five second chance points each.

Just the fourth meeting between the two schools on the basketball court with the Falcons 0-4 all-time when taking on the Engineers.

MIT came away with an 84-59 win over the Falcons last season (1/9/2017).

University on Saturday, December 30th in opening round action of the 2017-18 Naismith Classic, hosted by Springfield College at 7:30 P.M. Engineers will host the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth on Monday for a 7:00 P.M. start.
