Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University men's basketball team delivered a balanced offensive attack with an 89-54 decision over the Lancers of Worcester State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday afternoon at Parkinson's Gymnasium.

How It Happened

Trailing 9-12 with 15:40 to play in the first half the Falcons exploded with a 12-0 streak for a 21-12 advantage and never looked back. Junior Jonathan Perez (Lowell, Mass.) powered the attack leading the green and gold with 9 points in the unanswered run.  Worcester State cut the deficit to seven (23-16) when sophomore Shaun McCarthy (Oxford, Mass.) hit a jumper from the top of the key with 9:43 remaining. The Falcons built their biggest lead of the half (37-22) after Perez drained a 3-pointer from the corner with 3:19 to play in the frame, and carried a 38-26 score into intermission.

After halftime Worcester put together 5-0 run off the back of sophomore Cal Howes (Maynard, Mass.) to trail 42-33 just three minutes into the second stanza. However the hosts received consecutive baskets from Brandon Harris (San Bernardino, Calif), Troy DaCosta (Cambridge, Mass.) and Tyrell St. John (Stamford, Conn.) to extend the lead to 68-40 with 8:01 to play, en route to the 89-54 final.

Inside the Numbers

The Falcons had five players in double figures. St. John had a game-high 19 points and Nicholas Tracy (Indianapolis, Ind.) chipped in with 17 points. Senior Josh Bosworth (Springfield, Mass.) and Perez added 14, while Harris posted 12 points off the bench.

Worcester was led by both Shaun McCarthy and Cal Howes who both collected 14 points in the loss.

Fitchburg State held the advantage in shooting percentage (46.8% to 33.3%) and rebounds (45-39).

106th meeting between the two schools on the parquet with the Falcons 39-66 all-time when taking on the Lancers.

Fitchburg State has won three of the last four games against Worcester State, including a 91-88 victory earlier this season (1/20/18) at the John P. Brissette Competition Court.
