Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University men's basketball team fell (83-80) to the visiting Pride of Regis College in a non-conference match-up tonight at Parkinson gymnasium.

How It Happened

Fitchburg took an early 8-3 as senior Nicholas Tracy (Indianapolis, Ind.) delivered a pair of layups, including his 1,000 career point to spark the Falcons. The hosts extended the lead to 19-9 with and 8-0 run capped by a bucket from newcomer Xavier Betancourt (Tampa, Fla.). With under 10 minutes remaining, Regis senior Dimitri Rosa (Tiverton, RI) connected on a deep three-pointer to cut the deficit to 23-19. Junior Jalil Wilkerson (New Haven, Conn.) evened the score (31-31) with a trey from the corner and freshman Jackson Swihart (Miami, Fla) gave the Pride their first lead of the game (34-33). Regis took a 38-37 lead into the lockroom.

Following intermission Falcons reeled off a 6-0 run with hoops from senior Jordon Jones (Worcester, Mass.), freshman Keegan Sharp (Townsend, Mass.) and Betancourt to take a 47-43 lead. Then Rosa put the Pride on his back hitting five consecutive three-pointers to knot the score (57-57) with eleven minutes to play. Trailing 67-66 Regis ran off a 6-0 streak to take the largest lead of the second half (72-67). The Falcons responded with five points from sophomore Dominik Williams (Newark, NJ) to take a 78-77 lead with 1:10 to play. However, the visitors outscored the Falcons down the stretch 6-2 to seal the victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • Fitchburg State was led by Sharp with a team-leading 19 points and 10 boards for the double-double, while Bentancourt added 12 points off the bench.
  • Tracy was the 24th player in Fitchburg State history to record 1,000 points
  • The Pride were paced by Rosa's game-high 28 points, while junior Mark Trinidad (Bronx, NY) finished with 12 points, and a game-high 14 rebounds.
  • Fitchburg State went 34-for-69 (47.9%) overall and (2-for-16) 12.5% from three point range.
  • Regis shot 30-for-71 (42.3%) from the field and (12-of-26) 46.2% from beyond the arc.
  • The Pride held a 42-38 edge on the glass.

The Falcons will host the Vikings of Salem State on Saturday afternoon when they open MASCAC conference play at 3:00pm.  Regis will travel to Johnson & Wales University on the same day for a 2:00 pm tilt.
