Bulldogs Nip Falcons in Non-Conference Action, 66-64



Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University men's basketball fell in a hard-fought contest 66-64 to the Bulldogs of Dean College on Saturday afternoon at Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

1st half

Dean grabbed an early 5-0 advantage as senior Winston Bryan (Greensboro, NC) drained a three pointer before Fitchburg State evened the score at 9-9 on a trey from sophomore Javon Taylor (Cambridge, Mass.). The Falcons took their first lead at 12-11 when Taylor connected from downtown. The Bulldogs upped their margin (20-12) with a layup from Mark Blair (Rosedale, NY) midway through the first half. A pair from the charity strip extended Dean's lead to 26-18, however the Falcons countered with a 6-0 run to close out the first half to trail 28-26. Junior Bryan Tyrie (Hanson, Mass.) had a pair of buckets in the run.

2nd half

It was a back-and-forth affair following intermission. The Green and Gold regained the lead (34-33) on a three-point play from sophomore Quincy Taylor (Boston, Mass.) just two minutes into the frame. The Bulldogs responded with a Bryan three pointer for the 38-35 edge. The two teams traded leads over the next several minutes as junior Darian Norwood (San Diego, Calif) put back his own rebound to knot the game at 49-49 at the midway point.

The Falcons would go up by four (56-62) with a three-point play from sophomore Kerns Monvilus (Coral Springs, Fla.) and a layup from Q. Taylor. The Bulldogs countered with a pair of hoops from Hunter Meyer (Taylor Mill, Ky.)  to lead 61-59, but Fitchburg State responded with a jumper from Q. Taylor to tie the game (61-61) with three minutes remaining. The visitors would finish the game with a 5-3 run including three from the charity strip to seal the 66-64 victory. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Fitchburg State was led by Quincy Taylor who had a monster game with 21 point and 17 rebounds for the double-double, while Monvilus added another double-double with 17 points and 10 caroms.  
  • Fitchburg State went 26-for-72 (36.1%) overall and (3-for-22) 13.6% from three-point range.
  • Dean shot 22-for-53 (40.7%) from the field and (3-of-16) 18.8% from beyond the arc.
  • The Falcons held a 52-36 edge on the glass.
