Pescosolido Crowned Semi-Finalist For Joe Concannon Award

Framingham, Mass. native lone MASCAC player selected among 16 NCAA D-II/III players

FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 15, 2011) – Fitchburg State senior Billy Pescosolido (Framingham, Mass./Walpole Express) was recently named as one of the 16 NCAA Division II/III semi-finalists for the eleventh Joe Concannon Award as announced by Gridiron Club of Greater Boston President Ray Gallant Monday afternoon.

BILLY PESCOSOLIDO

The Joe Concannon Award, established in 2001 after the late Joe Concannon, is presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England playing at the Division II or III level. Concannon, a native of Litchfield, Connecticut and graduate of Boston University, served as Sports Information Director (SID) at Holy Cross before joining the Boston Globe in the late 1960’s. A former member of the Walter Brown Award Selection Committee, Concannon had been a staunch advocate for college hockey and the amateur athletes he covered before passing away in 2000.

Pescosolido, the lone player representing the MASCAC Conference, earns his first Joe Concannon Award nomination after proving to be an elite teammate on and off the ice. His stalwart play on the blue line has Fitchburg State ranked as one of the top defensive teams in the conference, limiting opponents to only 33 goals allowed and a minimal 2.32 goals per game. This season, Pescosolido has appeared in all 21 games for the Falcons, totaling 16 points on six goals and ten assists.

The Gridiron Club is set to announce the finalists and winner of the eleventh Joe Concannon Award in March, prior to the start of NCAA Frozen Four Tournament. The award will be presented during the New England Hockey Writers dinner in mid-April.

Fitchburg State (13-7-1, 7-6-1 MASCAC) will be back in action on Thursday as it travels to Westfield State University for a MASCAC match up starting at 7:35 p.m.
