Fitchburg State Ices Framingham State, 6-3

McCready and McAleer pace Falcons with six points in MASCAC Win

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (January 15, 2011) –  Junior Cory Callen (Annadale, N.J./Oswego State) scored two goals to propel the Fitchburg State ice hockey team to a 6-3 win over Framingham State in MASCAC action this afternoon .

Junior Thomas McAleer (East Islip, N.Y./New York Bobcats) and senior Kevin McCready (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Mohawk CC) each picked up a goal and two assists in the game for the Falcons, while junior Stephen Oldfield (Leominster, Mass./SNHU) added two assists.

Freshman Bo Driscoll (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the Rams offense with a goal, the first of his collegiate career, and an assist, while senior John Sheehan (Stoughton, Mass.) and freshman Eric Ward (Haverhill, Mass.) each scored once. Jamie Pollara (Plymouth, Mass.), Matt Margolis (Raleigh, N.C.) and Daniel Miressi (Monroe, Conn.) each contributed a single assists.

Fitchburg State took a 2-0 lead early in the first period, scoring two goal with in seconds of each other. Callen scored his first of the game at 13:32 as he returned to the ice after a penalty expired and snuck behind the Rams defense for a breakaway. Senior Andrew Jones (Franklin, Mass./Walpole Express) scored just eight seconds later off a faceoff at 13:40.  A minute later Sheehan scored for the Rams to cut the deficit in half, but Callen added his second of the game at 17:19 to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead after one.

Fitchburg State added two more scores in the second frame as McAleer netted a power play goal that proved to be the game winner just four minutes into the frame, and senior Travis Bertolotti (Miller Place, N.Y./New York Bobcats) added a marker at 11:13 mark.  Ward cut the Falcons lead to 5-2 with his goal late in the second, but both teams traded power play goals over the remainder of the contest to wrap up the scoring. McCready found the back of the net for the Falcons at 8:59, while Driscoll hit home for the Rams at 11:28.

The Falcons outshot the Rams 37-29 in the game and converted on 2-of-4 power play attempts while limiting the Rams to only one goal with a man advantage. Junior Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y./New York Applecore) picked up the win in net for the Falcons making 26 saves, while freshman Nick Cafrelli (San Jose, Calif.) made 31 saves in the loss.

Fitchburg State (10-4-0, 4-3-0 MASCAC) will hit the ice again on Thursday as it hosts Salem State at 7 p.m. Framingham State (1-10-0, 1-7-0 MASCAC) will travel to Worcester State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
