Salem State Blanks Fitchburg State, 3-0

Vorse turns away 19 shots in Falcons third straight MASCAC loss

SALEM, Mass. (February 12, 2011) –  Salem State's goaltending unit of Ryan Sutliffe (Grand Forks, N.D.) and James LaCour (Silver Springs, Md.) combined for 21 saves as the Vikings blanked Fitchburg State University, 3-0 in MASCAC action this afternoon.

ROBERT VORSE

LaCour, who was the official starter for the Vikings, stopped all nine shots he faced, while  Sutliffe turned away 12 shots between the pipes.  With victory, Salem State improves to 14-5-2 with a 9-4-2 mark in the MASCAC, while the Falcons drop to 13-7-1 on the season and 7-6-1 in conference play.

The Vikings broke a scoreless tie early in the second period as Mark Macdonald (Norwell, Mass.) scooped up a loose-puck rebound and slipped it past Falcon goaltender, Robert Vorse (Leominster, Mass./Bay State Breakers) to give the Vikings a one-goal advantage.

In the period, Fitchburg State had numerous chances on the power-play, but Salem State's defense, the MASCAC's most successful penalty kill unit, kept the Falcons off the scoreboard. Minutes later, the Vikings doubled their lead as Michael Genovese (Hingham, Mass.) connected with Nick Lampson (Groton, Mass.) for the second score of the game.

Salem State tacked on an insurance marker midway through the third period as Josh Franklin (Wrentham, Mass.) put away a free puck off Genovese's slap shot from the right point. Vorse finished the contest with 19 saves in the crease, while the Vikings held a slim 22-21 advantage in targets.

Fitchburg State (13-7-1, 7-6-1 MASCAC) will hit the ice again on Thursday as it travels to Westfield State at 7:35 p.m. Salem State (14-5-2, 9-4-2 MASCAC) will host St. Anslem's College in a non conference matchup on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
