Fitchburg State Rallies Past Wentworth, 8-6

Falcons advance to Codfish Bowl Championship tomorrow at 5 p.m.

BOSTON, Mass. (December 29, 2010) –  The Fitchburg State ice hockey team used a four goal third period to rally to an 8-6 non-conference victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology at the UMass Boston Codfish Bowl this afternoon.

With the victory, Fitchburg State (6-3-0, 3-3-0 MASCAC) advances to the championship round tomorrow at 5 p.m. to face the winner of this evening's match between UMass Boston and Assumption College. Wentworth (5-4-2, 3-1-1- ECAC NE) will battle in the consolation round tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Trailing 5-4 heading into the final period of play, Fitchburg State erupted with four consecutive goals to clinch its sixth victory of the season. Senior Erik Trahan (Manville, R.I./Winchendon School) opened the scoring for the Falcons with his first goal of the season just 43 seconds into the period, while sophomore Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies), senior Andrew Jones (Franklin, Mass./Walpole Express) and junior Thomas McAleer (East Islip, N.Y./New York Bobcats) added a trio of single markers.

Fitchburg State gathered a quick 2-0 advantage early in the first period as senior Billy Pescosolido (Framingham, Mass./Walpole Express) and junior Kris Threlkeld (Centerville, Ohio/CD Selects) opened the contest with back-to-back scores but Wentworth rifled off three unanswered tallies for a  3-2 lead at the intermission.

In the second frame, the Falcons knotted the score 4-4 with a pair of goals from senior Chris Riggs (Sewell, N.J./Fort Vancouver Pioneers) and sophomore Cory Callen (Annadale, N.J./Oswego), but the Leopards responded again with a late marker at 13:58 to maintain their one goal edge.

Over the final stanza, Fitchburg State took advantage of its opportunities, converting 4 of its 15 targets on net. Junior Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y./New York Applecore) earned the victory in relief for the Falcons, totaling 20 saves over two periods of work, while senior Robert Vorse (Leominster, Mass./Bay State Breakers) notched ten stops over the first 20 minutes of work.

Fitchburg State controlled the offensive end, converting 3 of its 4 power play opportunities, while tallying 33 shots on net and a shorthanded marker. Threlkeld and Lawler paced the Falcons offense with four points apiece (1 goal, 3 assists), while Riggs added a score and two helpers for three points on the afternoon.
