Threlkeld lifts Falcons with game-winning marker in overtime period
WESTFIELD, Mass. (December 2, 2010) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team rebounded this evening, earning a 3-2 overtime victory over Westfield State University in MASCAC action this evening.

Fitchburg State scored with 1:23 remaining in overtime to collect its fourth victory of the season and improve to 2-1-0 in the league. Junior Kris Threlkeld (Centerville, Ohio/CD Selects) netted the game-winning marker, taking a feed from sophomore Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) for his fourth goal of the season.
The Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead using a pair of goals by senior Kevin McCready (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Mohawk CC). McCready put Fitchburg State on the board at the 15:50 mark before connecting for his second goal of the on a Falcon power play at 19:22.
Westfield State erased the 2-0 deficit by scoring twice in a 1:15 span of the third period. Senior center Dennis Zak (Dover, N.J./Dobourg Cougars) scored the game-tying goal several seconds into a power play to knot the game at 2-2 with 11:54 remaining in regulation. Freshman Vince Perreault (Braeside, ON/Kemptville 73’s) netted the Owls first goal of the contest, while Pat Nelson (Cary, N.C./Queen City Steam) notched assists on each scoring drive.
On the offensive front, Westfield State held a slim 41-38 margin in shots on goal, but junior goaltender Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y./New York Applecore) finished with 39 saves between the pipes to earn his second victory of the season. Freshman Eddie Davey (Orangeville, ON/Abitibi Eskimos) finished with 36 stops for the Owls.
Fitchburg State (4-1-0, 2-1-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Worcester State at 7:30 p.m. Westfield State (1-5-1, 1-2-0 MASCAC) will travel to Salem State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
