Plymouth State Blanks Fitchburg State, 4-0

Wolcott posts 22 saves between pipes for Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 28, 2012) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team suffered its first loss in its last four contests, falling to Plymouth State University, 4-0 in MASCAC action this afternoon.

After a scoreless first period, Plymouth State got on the scoreboard first midway through the second, using an unassisted marker from freshman Zach Sarig (Reading, Pa./Valley Jr Warriors) for a 1-0 lead.

In the third period, the Panthers doubled their lead quickly, posting a 2-0 advantage just 2:54 into the frame. Junior Kyle Weiland (Hampden, Maine/Bay State Breakers) hit home for Plymouth State, registering his sixth goal of the season with helpers from Dave Walters (Ottawa, ON/Ottawa Jr. Senators) and Sarig.

The Panthers were not finished in the third period, exploding for a total of three goals in the frame, including back-to-back markers Alex Cottle (West Chester, Pa./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) and Kyle Greco (Hillside, Ill./Wisconsin-Stevens Point). Plymouth State found its offensive momentum early in the period, scoring three times over a 2:28 span to secure its tenth victory of the season.

Between the pipes, sophomore Tyler Ingerson (Concord, N.H./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) earned the victory for the Panthers, stopping all 29 shots faced en route to his first shutout of the season. Sophomore Randy Wolcott (East Haven, Conn./Wisconsin-Stevens Point) suffered the loss for the Falcons, yielding four goals (22 saves) over 45 minutes of work.

For the contest, both teams fell dead even in shots with 29 targets apiece, but Plymouth State held the advantage on the power-play, cashing in on three of its six power-play opportunities. Fitchburg State managed four power-play opportunities throughout the match, but the Panthers held the Falcons silent for their third shutout of the year.

Fitchburg State (7-9-2, 6-5-1 MASCAC) will be in action again on Thursday as it travels to Framingham State at 7:30 p.m. Plymouth State (10-6-2, 7-3-2 MASCAC) will host Westfield State on Thursday at 6 p.m.
