Falcon Trio Takes MASCAC Weekly Awards

Leiser, Muolo and Fahey earn POW honors in respective sports

FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 7, 2012) – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team, men’s track team and women’s basketball team combined for three MASCAC Player of the Week nominations this week as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

Senior Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y./New York Applecore) and classmate Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) paved the way for the men, earning MASCAC Goalie and Field Athlete of the Week respectively, while sophomore Amy Fahey (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) was honored with the MASCAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week accolade.

Leiser led the Falcons ice hockey team to a 1-0-1 week, posting a 1.97 goals against average (GAA) and .944 save percentage over 125 minutes of work. Leiser lifted the Falcons to a 6-2 victory over Framingham State, totaling 29 saves between the pipes, while also adding 38 stops in a 2-2 draw with Salem State.

 Muolo collects his second consecutive Player of the Week nomination after leading the Fitchburg State men’s track and field team at the Tufts University Stampede. Muolo took top honors in the weigh throw with a toss of 17.55m, while adding a second place effort in the shot put with a distance of 14.53m.

Fahey rounds out the list of weekly award winners, claiming yet another MASCAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week on 2011-12 season. This week, the sophomore forward led the Falcons to a 1-0 mark, notching a double-double effort of 34 points and 15 boards in a 71-69 victory over Framingham State. Fahey shot 12-of-18 from the field, while hitting 10-of-16 from the charity stripe. .

The Fitchburg State women’s basketball team will be back in action tonight as it travels to Worcester State at 8 p.m. The Falcons track and field teams will compete in the MASCAC Championships this Saturday at 11 a.m., while the ice hockey team will square off vs. Worcester State on Thursday at 7 p.m.
