Caveney Named Finalist For Joe Concannon Award

Fitchburg, Mass. native lone MASCAC player selected among six NCAA D-II/III players

FITCHBURG, Mass. (March 21, 2013) – The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston president Bob Norton announced Norwich forward Colin Mulvey as the winner of the thirteenth annual Joe Concannon Award this morning.

Joining Mulvey as a Finalist for this years' award were Fitchburg State senior Joseph Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies),senior Shaun Jameson from Wentworth, junior Keith Buehler from Wesleyan University, senior Daniel Weiniger from Bowdoin College and junior Travis Daniel from Umass Boston.

Caveney, the lone player to represent the MASCAC Conference, earns his first Joe Concannon Award finalist nomination after proving to be an elite teammate on and off the ice. His stellar play on the front line had Fitchburg State ranked as one of the top offensive teams in the conference, averaging 3.52 goals per contest. This season, the second year Falcon appeared in all 27 games for Fitchburg State, leading both the team and league in scoring with 47 points on 17 goals and 30 assists.

Along with being named a finalist for the Joe Concannon Award, Caveney led the nation in scoring among all division three schools, averaging 1.74 points per contest. More recently, Caveney the reigning MASCAC Player of the Year, earned All-American accolades, being named to the USCHO East All-American second team.

The Joe Concannon Award, established in 2001 after the late Joe Concannon, is presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England playing at the Division II or III level. Concannon, a native of Litchfield, Connecticut and graduate of Boston University, served as Sports Information Director (SID) at Holy Cross before joining the Boston Globe in the late 1960's. A former member of the Walter Brown Award Selection Committee, Concannon had been a staunch advocate for college hockey and the amateur athletes he covered before passing away in 2000. 

The Fitchburg State ice hockey team concluded the 2012-13 campaign with an overall record of 11-14-2 and a 9-8-1 mark in the MASCAC.
