Fitchburg State Doubles Up Franklin Pierce, 4-2

Martin registers three points in Falcons non-conference victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 7, 2013) – Freshman forward Jake Martin (Montreal, Que.) posted a game-best three points on one goal and two assists as the Fitchburg State ice hockey team defeated Franklin Pierce University, 4-2 in non-conference action this evening at the Wallace Civic Center.

Franklin Pierce took the lead at the 16:35 mark of the first stanza as sophomore forward Brendan Glynn (Quincy, Mass.) intercepted a pass at the blue line and tucked the puck inside the right post for the unassisted tally to make the score 1-0 after one period of play.

In the middle frame, Fitchburg State knotted the score (1-1) with just over one minute remaining in the stanza when sophomore Max Lorenzen (Leesburg, Va.) gathered feeds from classmate John Celli (Leominster, Mass.) and Martin and fired a shot into the back of the net for his first marker of the season.

The Ravens regained the lead 40 seconds later when senior Tyler Cornele (Cape Coral, Fla.) collected a loose puck in front of the net and blasted a shot into the lower right corner for the 2-1 advantage going into the final frame.

In the third period, the Falcons retied the game just 1:05 into the stanza as sophomore Ryan Connolly (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) connected for a power play tally off assists from Martin and junior Craig Halpin (Irvington, N.Y.) to make the score 2-2. The Green and Gold took the lead for good at the 17:27 mark when Martin notched his second score of the season, using assists from Celli and Halpin to put the Falcons up 3-2.           

Fitchburg State iced the game with two second remaining in the contest when sophomore forward Ryan Bedard (Derby Line, Vt.) fired the puck from just beyond center ice into the empty net, resulting in the 4-2 final.

For the contest, Fitchburg State held a 39-28 margin in shots, while the Ravens recorded four power plays throughout the match. In net, junior Dan Finn (Fitchburg, Mass.) registered 26 saves for the Falcons en-route to his first collegiate victory, while sophomore Kyle Moran (Marshfield, Mass.) stopped 35 shots for Franklin Pierce in the setback.

Fitchburg State (2-2-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) returns to action next Thursday as it travels to Plymouth State for a contest starting at 6 p.m. Franklin Pierce (0-3-0, 0-0-0 NE-10) will host Assumption College on Saturday at 7 p.m.
