New England College Shuts Down Fitchburg State, 7-0

Wysocki and McMahon combine to stop 33 shots for the Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 5, 2013) – Seniors Jesse Ostring (Ylojarvi, Finland) and Ben Maclaughlin (Beverly, Mass.) collected two goals each to lift New England College past Fitchburg State, 7-0 in non-conference ice hockey action this evening at the Wallace Civic Center.

Following a scoreless first frame, New England College broke the 0-0 stalemate at the 4:35 mark as sophomore Garrett Brazzier (Mississauga, Ont.) found the back of the net for his first score of the season off an assist from junior Samuli Turunen (Joensuu, Finland) for the 1-0 lead.

The Pilgrims doubled their margin (2-0) two and half minutes later when Ostring blasted a shot into the upper right corner of the net on assists from junior James O'Reilly (Charleston, S.C.) and sophomore Jonatan Nilsson (Vimmerby, Sweden).

The visitors upped their advantage at the 11:57 mark as sophomore Cheyne Matheson (Wheatley, Ont.) collected a feed from Maclaughlin and freshman John Quinlan (Marlton, N.J.) and slipped the puck inside the near post for the 3-0 lead before sophomore Kyle Manlow (Murretta, Calif.) put the Pilgrims up 4-0 just before intermission.

In the final period of play, New England College continued the offensive pressure as Maclaughlin notched his first score of the contest at 7:06 mark to make the score 5-0 before collecting his second tally less than three minutes later. The Pilgrims capped the game's scoring with just under three minutes remaining in regulation on Ostring's second marker of the match, resulting in the 7-0 final.

Throughout the contest, New England College held a 40-18 margin in shots, while the Falcons finished 0-for-6 on the power-play. In net, juniors Ryan Wysocki (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Corey McMahon (Lunenburg, Mass.) combined to stop 33 shots for Fitchburg State, while senior Sebastian Anderson (Sundyberg, Sweden) totaled 18 saves en-route to the complete game shutout for the Pilgrims.

Fitchburg State (1-2-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Thursday as it hosts Franklin Pierce University at 7 p.m. New England College (1-0-0, 0-0-0 ECAC East) will travel to UMass Boston on Friday at 7 p.m.
