Fitchburg State Blanks UMass Dartmouth, 3-0

Genova registers two scores in Falcons MASCAC victory

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (December 7, 2013) – Sophomore forward Timmy Genova (Smithtown, N.Y.) collected a pair of goals as the Fitchburg State ice hockey team defeated UMass Dartmouth, 3-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) ice hockey action this afternoon at Hetland Arena.

Following a scoreless first period, Fitchburg State took the lead at the 10:27 mark of the second stanza as junior forward Thomas Carlow (Franklin, Mass) redirected a shot from freshman Mike Fish (Salisbury, Mass.) into the upper right corner of the net for his first score of the season, while sophomore Paul Falanga (East Haven, Conn.) picked up the second assist for the 1-0 margin.

The Falcons nearly doubled their lead with about one minute remaining in the second period when sophomore Ryan Connolly (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and Genova both had quality scoring chances turned aside by UMass Dartmouth goaltender Ben Vandervies (Hanna, Alberta) to keep the score at 1-0 going into the second intermission.

In the final frame, the Green and Gold upped their advantage (2-0) at the 4:35 mark as Genova slipped the puck inside the near post for his second tally of the season on assists from sophomore John Celli (Leominster, Mass.) and junior Brett Nussbaum (Boca Raton, Fla.).

Fitchburg State secured its third conference victory of the season as Genova intercepted a pass as center ice and fired a shot into the empty net for his second marker of the game, resulting in the 3-0 final.

Throughout the contest Fitchburg State held a commanding 50-37 advantage in shots, while the Corsairs notched just one power-play throughout the game. In net, junior Ryan Wysocki (Grand Rapids, Mich.) posted 37 saves for the Falcons en-route to his first collegiate shutout, while Vandervies stopped 47 shots for Umass Dartmouth in 58:17 minutes of action.
