UMass Dartmouth Rallies Past Fitchburg State, 6-4

Snyder registers two goals for Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Sophomore forward Cameron Snyder posted two goals for the Falcons but the UMass Dartmouth ice hockey team was able to rally past Fitchburg State, 6-4 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) ice hockey action this evening at the Wallace Civic Center.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring at the 4:33 mark as junior forward Ryan Connolly gathered a loose puck in front of the net off his own shot and wristed a shot inside the near post for the 1-0 margin. Classmate John Celli and sophomore Jordan Furlane assisted on the play.

The Falcons doubled their lead (2--0) three and half minutes later when Snyder took a feed from Connolly and deposited the puck into the back of the net for his team-leading seventh tally on the season.

The Green and Gold upped its advantage at the 9:46 mark as sophomore Mike Fish received a pair of feeds from senior Sean Loebs and newcomer Corey Hayashi and blasted a shot into the net for the 3-0 lead.

UMass Dartmouth broke its scoring silence with just over eight minutes remaining in the period when senior forward Shaun Walters found the back of the net on the power-play, using assists from sophomore Matt Baldino and junior Mike Grassi to make the score 3-1 after 20 minutes of play.

In the middle stanza, the Corsairs cut the deficit to one (3-2) at the 5:32 mark as freshman Jaret Babych took a pass from classmate Casey Shea and sophomore Mike Kelly and slipped the puck inside the far post.

The Falcons responded midway through the period when junior forward Stephen Carlette, slide a pass over to Snyder, who one-timed a shot into the upper right corner of the net for his second marker of the contest for the 4-2 advantage going into the final period of play.

In the final frame, the visitors were able to make it a one score game (4-3) again six minutes into the period as Walters connected on his second goal of the game off assists from juniors Mike Restuccia and John Sartell.

The Corsairs knotted the contest at the 14:25 mark when junior Garrett Allen blasted a shot into the right side of the net before taking the lead for good roughly two minutes later on a goal by newcomer Shayne Bailey as Restucci picked up an assist on the play, resulting in the 6-4 final.

Throughout the contest, UMass Dartmouth held a 38-32 advantage in shots, while the Falcons finished 1-for-2 with the man advantage. In net, senior Ryan Wysocki stopped 28 shots for the Fitchburg State in 59:19 minutes of action, while sophomore JJ Solloway made 28 saves for the Corsairs in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (3-6-2, 2-3-1 MASCAC) is off until Tuesday January 6th when it travels to Assumption College for a contest starting at 7:35 p.m. UMass Dartmouth (2-7-2, 2-2-2 MASCAC) returns to action on Wednesday January 7th as it visits Johnson and Wales University at 7:10 p.m.
