Salem State Doubles Up Fitchburg State, 6-3

Lorenzen notches two goals for Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Junior forward Max Lorenzen registered a pair of markers as the Fitchburg State ice hockey dropped a 6-3 decision to the Vikings of Salem State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at the Wallace Civic Center.

Fitchburg State jumped out to a quick lead just 36 seconds into the opening period as junior forward John Celli fired a shot inside the near post for his seventh marker of the season for the early 1-0 advantage.

The Vikings knotted the score (1-1) at the 7:28 mark when junior Andrew Bettencourt gathered a feed from freshman Michael Casale and deposited the puck into the back of the net for his second score on the season.

Salem State grabbed the lead with just over five minutes remaining in the frame as freshman forward Derek Makimaa connected on an unassisted marker for his fifth goal of the year to make the score 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.

In the middle stanza, the Falcons retied the contest (2-2) 38 seconds into the period when Lorenzen redirected a shot off the stick of classmate Ryan Bedard in front of the net for this fourth tally of the season.

The visitors regained the lead at the 5:18 mark as junior Cam Moniz received a pass from sophomore Jon Hart and slipped a shot inside the right post for his first score of the season for the 3-2 margin.

Salem State upped its advantage with about four minutes remaining in the frame when Moniz fired a shot into the back of the net for his second tally of the contest to make it 4-2, before Casale notched his fourth goal of the season two minutes later for the 5-2 lead going into the final period of play.

In the third period, the Green and Gold cut into the deficit at the 13:13 mark as Lorenzen settled a feed from sophomore Cameron Snyder and slipped the puck into the upper right corner of the net for his second score of the contest to make the score 5-3.

The Vikings secured their ninth win of the season when Bettencourt notched an empty netter off an assist from junior Chris Mastropietro with 23 seconds remaining in the game, resulting in the 6-3 victory.

Throughout the contest, Salem State held a 46-31 margin in shots, while the Falcons finished 0-for-2 on the power-play. Between the pipes, seniors Ryan Wysocki and Dan Finn combined to stop 40 shots for Fitchburg State, while freshman Jason Pucciarelli made 28 saves for the Vikings in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (7-8-2, 5-4-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it travels to UMass Dartmouth at 5:30 p.m. Salem State (9-8-1, 6-5-0 MASCASC) will host Worcester State University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
