Southern Maine Downs Fitchburg State, 5-2

Fretz notches first collegiate tally in non-conference setback

FITCHBURG, Mass.– Senior forward Zach Dymock collected two goals and one assist as the visiting Huskies of Southern Maine defeated Fitchburg State, 5-2 in opening round action of the 2015 ICFCU Shootout this evening at the Wallace Civic Center. 

Southern Maine took the lead 8:25 into the first period as Dymock converted with the man advantage for his first tally of the season on assists from classmates Chad O'Brien and PM Lapointe for the 1-0 advantage after one period of play. 

In the second period, Fitchburg State knotted the score (1-1) midway through the frame when newcomer Mike Fretz gathered a feed from classmate Ricky Kramer and senior John Celli and slipped a shot into the back of net for his first collegiate score. 

The Falcons grabbed the lead two minutes later as Celli rifled a shot into the upper right corner of the net off an assist from fellow senior Ryan Bedard to make the score 2-1 

The Huskies quickly retied the contest (2-2) with five and half minutes remaining in the stanza when freshman forward Jimmy Currier blasted a shot inside the near post for his first collegiate score. 

Southern Maine regained the lead at the 17:23 mark as sophomore Patrick Magliano one time d shot into the upper left corner off assists from Dymock and junior Cole Klippenstein for the 3-2 margin after 40 minutes of play.

In the final period of play, the visitors upped its lead roughly two minutes into the period when newcomer Tyler Mathieu deposited the puck inside the near post for his first collegiate goal as sophomore Lucas Braniin and Currier assisted on the play for the 4-2 advantage.

The Huskies added an insurance markers with just over one minute left in the contest as Dymock wristed a shot into an empty net for his second score of the contest on feeds from freshman Connor Ferrera and Lapointe, resulting in the 5-2 final 

Throughout the contest, Southern Maine finished with a 38-30 margin in shots, while the Falcons went 1-for-7 with the man advantage. In between the pipes, senior Corey McMahon stopped 33 shots for the Falcons, while sophomore Kyle Shapiro made 34 saves for the Huskies in the complete game effort. 

Fitchburg State (0-1-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) returns to action tomorrow as it hosts the Leopards of Wentworth in second round action of the ICFCU Shootout at 4 p.m. Southern Maine (1-0-0, 0-0-0 ECAC East) will take on Worcester State tomorrow in second round action of the ICFCU Shootout at 1 p.m.
