Fitchburg State Holds Off New England College, 3-2

McPherson tallies first collegiate marker for Falcons in non-conference victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Three different Falcons registered a goal as the Fitchburg State ice hockey team defeated New England College, 3-2 in non-conference action this evening at the Wallace Civic Center. 

Fitchburg State opened the scoring at the 7:02 mark as junior forward Cameron Snyder took a feed from senior Max Lorenzen and blasted a shot into the left side of the net on the power-play for the 1-0 lead.

The Falcons doubled their margin (2-0) two minutes later when senior forward John Celli collected a loose puck in front of the net and deposited the puck inside the far post for his third goal on the season on assists from classmate Nat Rojas and freshman Ricky Kramer.

In the middle stanza, Fitchburg State upped its advantage at the 13:22 mark as newcomer Connor McPherson rifled a shot into the upper left corner for his first collegiate tally on a feed from senior Nat Rojas to make the score 3-0. 

In the final period of play, New England College broke its scoring silence just 17 seconds into the frame when sophomore Kyle Arenson collected a feed from senior Garrett Brazzier and deposited the puck into the back of the net to cut the lead to 3-1.

The Pilgrims made it a one score game (3-2) with just over five minutes remaining in the third period as freshman forward Connor Fries connected on his first collegiate tally, using an assist from classmate Mike Whitehair

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State held a slim 35-33 advantage in shots, while the Pilgrims finished 0-for-6 with the man advantage. In goal, freshman Charles Jakobsson stopped 31 shots in his collegiate debut for the Falcons, while junior Brett Kilar made 32 saves in 59:48 minutes of action for New England College. 

Fitchburg State (2-1-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it travels to Framingham State at 7:40 p.m. New England College (0-1-0, 0-0-0 NEHC) will host the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College on Friday for a contest starting at 7 p.m.
