Fitchburg State Edged By Plymouth State, 3-2

Genova and Hayashi collect one goal each for Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass. The Fitchburg State ice hockey team was in action this evening, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Panthers of Plymouth State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at the Wallace Civic Center.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring with 12:23 left in the first period as freshman Ricky Kramer brought the puck into the attacking zone and sent a pass to Timmy Genova who would send his wrist shot past the sprawling Gordon Ceasar for his second goal of the for the 1-0 advantage after 20 minutes of play.

In the second period, Plymouth State got the equalizer (1-1) early in the frame when a pass was intercepted and sent to the net by junior forward Michael Economos for his fifth tally on the season just 17 seconds in.

With 5:19 left in the stanza, the Panthers grabbed their first lead of the game, as consecutive passes by senior Josh Woody and junior Erik Strom set up Caleb O'Brien, who proceeded to wrist a shot inside the far post for his first collegiate tally.

The Green and Gold retied the contest (2-2) at the 17:39 mark when sophomore forward Corey Hayashi gathered a loose puck of a shot by freshman Nick DiNicola, Hayashi controlled the bounce off the boards pushing the shot into the back of the net for his first collegiate tally.

Late in the final period the visiting Panthers scored the decisive goal on a 2 on 2 attack in the zone, senior forward Josh Woody faked the pass before sending a quick wrister inside the near post for his team-leading sixth score of the season off assist from senior Andrew Wigg and O'Brien, resulting in the 3-2 final.

Throughout the contest, Plymouth State held a 43-30 advantage in shots, while the Falcons finished 0-for-2 on the power-play. In goal, senior Corey McMahon totaled 40 saves for Fitchburg State in 59:05 minutes of action, while Ceasar stopped 28 shots for the Panthers in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (4-4-0, 2-3-0 MASCAC) return to the ice following an extended break on Thursday, December 3rd as it hosts the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth at 7 p.m. Plymouth State (5-1-0, 4-0-0 MASCAC) will travel to Connecticut College on Tuesday for a contest starting at 5 p.m.
