Fitchburg State Falls At Plattsburgh State, 7-0

Jakobsson and Wold combine to stop 34 shots for Falcons in non-conference setback

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team was in action this evening, dropping a 7-0 decision to the Cardinals of Plattsburgh State in opening round action of the 2015-16 WB Mason/Buck Supply Winter Classic at the Stafford Ice Arena.

In the opening period, Plattsburgh State took the lead midway through the frame as freshman forward Pat Egen gathered a feed from sophomore Brandon O'Quinn and fired a shot into the right side of the net on the power play for his fifth tally on the season for the 1-0 margin.

The Cardinals doubled their advantage (2-0) roughly two and half minutes later when Egen deposited the puck into the back of the net for his second marker of the contest on assists from freshmen Cam Owens and Nick Belger.

The hosts upped its lead at the 14:53 mark as freshman forward Cole Stallard received  a pass from classmate Luke Baleshta and wristed a shot inside the far post for his sixth goal on the season for the 3-0 advantage after 20 minutes of play.

In the middle stanza, Plattsburgh State added to its lead at the 5:32 mark when Owens blasted a shot into the upper right corner of the net for his second score of the 2015-16 campaign before O'Quinn struck for his third goal of the year six minutes later for the 5-0 margin.

In the final period of play, the Cardinals secured its ninth win on the year at the 10:21 mark as Baleshta fired a shot inside the near post for his second tally of the season for the 6-0 lead before junior Kyle Hall capped the scoring for Plattsburgh State with his third goal of the season with 15 seconds remaining in the contest, resulting in the 7-0 final.

Throughout the contest, Plattsburgh State held a 41-18 advantage in shots, while the Falcons finished 0-for-2 with the man advantage. In net, freshman Charles Jakobsson stopped 25 shots for Fitchburg State in 40 minutes of action, while junior Brady Rouleau made 18 saves for the Cardinals en-route to his third win of the season.

Fitchburg State (5-5-1, 2-3-1 MASCAC) returns to action tomorrow as takes on the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College in the consolation round of the 2016 WB Mason/Buck Supply Winter Classic at 4 p.m. SUNY Plattsburgh (9-1-1, 5-1-1 SUNYAC) will battle Colby College tomorrow in the championship game of the tournament at 7 p.m.
