Fitchburg State Clipped By Nazareth, 5-2

Fretz and Fish net one goal each for Falcons in non-conference setback

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team suffer a tough 5-2 setback to the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College in the consolation game for the 2015-16 WB Mason/Buck Supply Winter Classic hosted by Plattsburgh State at the Stafford Ice Arena this evening.

In the first period of play, Nazareth took the lead just 59 seconds into the frame as defenseman Scott Dawson collected a feed from junior Dominik Gabaj and freshman Austin Romzek and blasted a shot into the back of the net for the power-play tally for the 1-0 advantage.

The Golden Flyers doubled their margin (2-0) roughly three minutes later when sophomore forward John Power deposited the puck inside the far post for his third marker on the season for the unassisted power-play goal.

Fitchburg State broke its scoring silence at the 8:33 mark as freshman forward Michael Fretz fired a shot into the upper right corner for his fifth score on the season on assists from classmate Nick DiNicola and sophomore James Gordon to make the score 2-1. 

Nazareth upped its lead three minutes later when Power gathered a pass from senior Packy Jones and junior Justin LaCorte and rifled a shot into the back of the net for his second tally of the contest for the 3-1 margin after 20 minutes of play.

In the middle stanza, the Falcons cut the deficit to one (3-2) at the 6:11 mark as junior forward Mike Fish wristed a shot inside the near post for his second marker of the season as newcomer Connor McPherson and senior Nat Rojas assisted on the play.

The Golden Flyers regained its two goal lead with just over five minutes left in the second period when Jones settled a pass from Power and snapped a shot into the right side of the net to the 4-2 advantage after two periods of play.

In the third period, Nazareth added an insurance goal at the 18:31 mark as Romzek deposited the puck into an empty for his second marker of the season, resulting in the 5-2 final.

Throughout the contest, Nazareth held a 44-25 advantage in shots, while the Falcons finished 0-for-1 with the man advantage. In goal, freshman Quinn Wold made his first collegiate start for Fitchburg State, turning away 39 shots in 58:13 minutes of action, while counterpart Ty Hough made 23 saves for the Golden Flyers in 60 minutes of work.

Fitchburg State (5-6-1, 2-3-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it hosts the Greyhounds of Assumption College for a contest starting at 7 p.m. Nazareth (3-6-4, 2-3-1 ECACW) will host Oswego State next Saturday at 7 p.m.
