Fitchburg State Rebounds Over Framingham State, 4-0

Connolly tallies a pair of markers for Falcons in MASCAC victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Freshman goaltender Charles Jakobsson picked up his first collegiate shutout stopping all 41 shots he faced as the Fitchburg State ice hockey team defeated the visiting Rams of Framingham State University this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Wallace Civic Center.

The Falcons took the initial strike mid-way through the first period when freshman defender Ricky Kramer swiped the puck in the defensive zone setting up a 2-on-1 finished by senior Ryan Connolly for his seventh tally on the season for the 1-0 margin.

After Jakobsson denied consecutive attempts by Framingham State, Fitchburg doubled their lead (2-0) with just over three minutes left in the frame when freshman Connor McPherson rocketed a slap shot just past the blue line that was redirected into the back of the net by Connolly for his second tally of the game and sixth of the season.

16 seconds later freshman forward Nick DiNicola one-timed a shot inside the near post off assist from McPherson for his fifth goal on the year to push the Falcons lead to 3-0, going into the first intermission.

During the second period, Framingham State upped their tempo taking 19 shots in attempts to cut into the lead, but Jakobsson was ready for the challenge, making 19 saves and keeping the score at 3-0 going into the final period of action.

Late in the final stanza, the Green and Gold capped the scoring at the 17:32 mark when freshman forward Michael Fretz sent his wrist shot on frame and into the back of the net off assists from senior John Celli and DiNicola, resulting in the 4-0 final

Throughout the contest, Framingham State held a 41-26 margin in shots, while the Falcons finished 1-for-2 on the power-play. In goal, Jakobsson set a new single game career mark with 41 saves in the complete game effort for Fitchburg State, while junior Alessio Muggli stopped 22 shots for the Rams in 59:56 minutes of action.

Fitchburg State (6-7-1, 3-3-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Thursday as it travels to Westfield State University for a contest starting at 7:35 p.m. Framingham State 2-10-0, 1-6-0 MASCAC) will visit Worcester State University on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
