Warila nets first collegiate goal for Falcons in non-conference setback
Henniker, N.H. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team was in action this evening, suffering a tough 4-1 setback to the Pilgrims of New England College in non-conference action at the Lee Clement Arena.
New England College opened the scoring just 1:38 into the first period as senior forward Chris Santello deposited a shot into the lower right corner of the net for his first goal of the season for the 1-0 lead.
The Pilgrims double their margin (2-0) with just over six minutes left in the frame when sophomore forward Andreas Zollner received a feed from freshman forward Adam Zollner and found the back of the net for his first tally on the year.
The hosts upped its advantage roughly 30 seconds later as freshman defenseman Patrick DeBlois connected on his first collegiate goal with assists from junior Kyle Arenson and sophomore Mike Whitehair to make the score 3-0 after 20 minutes of play.
In the second period of play, New England College took a four goal lead midway through the stanza when Whitehair collected a feed from sophomore Connor Fries for his first marker of the season for the 4-0 lead.
In the third frame, Fitchburg State broke its scoring silence at the 6:04 mark as freshman forward Tyler Warila buried a shot into the right side of net for his first collegiate goal off a helper from sophomore forward Nick DiNicola resulting in the 4-1 final.
Throughout the game, each team registered 32 shots, while the Falcons finished 1-for-7 with the man advantage. In between the pipes, sophomore Quinn Wold and classmate Charles Jakobsson combined to stop 28 shots for Fitchburg State, while senior Brett Kilar made 31 saves for the Pilgrims in the complete game effort.
Fitchburg State (0-2-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it hosts the Rams of Framingham State for a contest starting 4 p.m. New England College (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NEHC) will visit Skidmore College on Friday at 7 p.m.
