Falcons And Corsairs Skate To 4-4 Overtime Draw

Perry and Figi net first collegiate tallies for Falcons

New Bedford, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University ice hockey team skated to a 4-4 overtime draw with the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at the Hetland Arena.

How It Happened

UMass Dartmouth took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame as sophomore forward Steven Leonard (Rockaway Port, N.Y,) found the back of the net at the 13:41 mark for the 1-0 lead before senior Mike Sones (Waterdown, Ont.) connected on a power-play tally late in the period for the 2-0 advantage going into the second period.

In the second stanza, the Corsairs upped its lead (3-0) with just over five minutes remaining in the period when freshman forward Kai Kapossey (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) struck for his first collegiate tally off an assist from junior Brendan McDonough (Wilmington, Mass.).

In the final period of play, Fitchburg State cut into the deficit 3:47 into the frame as freshman forward Kevin Perry (Hull, Mass.) fired a shot into the back of the net for his first collegiate tally off a helper from junior Josh Victor (Killeen, Tex.) to make the score 3-1.

With the score 4-1, the Falcons netted three goals in the span of three minutes on markers from sophomore Christopher Vicario (Cranston, R.I.), freshman Sascha Figi (Kloten, Switzerland) and junior Nick DiNicola (Wolcott, Conn.) to tie the game at 4-4 to force overtime.

Inside the Numbers

This evening's contest marked the 71tst meeting between two schools on the ice with the Falcons 27-37-7 all-time when taking on the Corsairs.

Two schools have split the previous six meeting with each other (2-2-2).

UMass Dartmouth held a 54-33 margin in shots.

Corsairs finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Falcons were 0-for-4 with the man advantage.

Junior Kirby Saari (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) stopped 50 shots for the Green and Gold

Senior Drew Michals (Newton, Mass.) made 29 saves for the Corsairs
