Fretz, Figi, DiNicola and Gordon each find the net once in key MASCAC victory 

Worcester, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University ice hockey team defeated the Lancers of Worcester State University, 4-2 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at the Worcester Ice Center.

How It Happened

Following a scoreless first period, Fitchburg State grabbed the lead at the 4:14 mark of the second frame as junior forward Michael Fretz (Seattle, Wash.) collected  a feed from senior Corey Hayashi (Toronto, Ont.) and freshman Joseph Miller (Malton, N.J.) before finding the back of the net for his second tally on the year for the 1-0 advantage.

The Falcons doubled their margin midway through the stanza when freshman Sascha Figi (Kloten, Switzerland) connected on this eighth marker of the season off assists from junior Nick DiNicola (Wolcott, Conn.) and sophomore Christopher Vicario (Cranston. R.I.) to make the score 2-0 going into the final period of play.

In the third period, the Green and Gold upped its lead to 3-1 as DiNicola struck for his fifth goal of the 2017-18 campaign at the at the 12:13 mark of the stanza before the Lancers cut into the deficit (3-2) roughly two minutes later when senior Alex Pommerville (Macedon, N.Y.) netted his first score of the season.

Fitchburg State added an insurance marker late in the period as senior James Gordon (Hingham, Mass.) potted an empty netter with just ten seconds remaining in regulation for his third goal on the year, resulting in the 4-2 final.

56th meeting between the two schools with the Falcons 40-16-3 all-time when taking on the Lancers.

Worcester State had won four the previous six matchups with Fitchburg State (4-1-1).

Lancer held a 37-28 margin in shots.

Fitchburg State finished 1-for-4 on the power-play, while Worcester State went 0-for-5 with the man advantage.

Junior goaltender Kirby Saari (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) stopped 35 shots for Fitchburg State in the winning effort.

Worcester State sophomore Josh Reinstein (Woodland Hills, Calif.) finished with 24 saves in the setback.
