Figi nets NCAA D3 leading 22nd goal

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University ice hockey team dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Panthers of Plymouth State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Saturday evening from the Wallace Civic Center.

The Falcons donned special white jerseys for the Glenn Roberts Memorial Hockey game benefiting the ALS Association Massachusetts Chapter.

How It Happened

Plymouth collected two goals in the opening frame. Freshman Grant Dewitt (Bowling Green, Ohio) potted his second of the season and senior Michael Covach (Shillington, Penn.) notched a late power-play to give the Panthers the advantage after twenty minutes of play.

Trailing 3-0 in the second period, the Falcons tipped the twine with a power-play goal at the 8:02 mark. Junior Christopher Vicario (Cranston, RI) collected a rebound off the pads of Panthers' netminder Evan Morelli (Reading, Mass.) for his 4th of the season. The Green and Gold made it a one goal game (3-2) when Vicario found an open Sascha Figi (Kloten, Switzerland) at the side of the net for the sophomores NCAA Division III leading 22nd goal.

Fitchburg finished the comeback knotting the score 3-3 just four minutes into the third period. Senior Michael Fretz (Seattle, Wash.) skating hard down the left wing deposited a wrist shot top shelf for the score.

Plymouth State pulled out the overtime win when junior Drake Longaker (San Jose, Calif.) converted a pass from senior Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, NJ) at the 2:59 mark.

By the Numbers

  • Vicario finished with one goal and an assist, while Fretz and Figi added goals
  • Plymouth held a 49-35 margin in shots
  • Fitchburg State finished 2-for-6 with the man advantage, the Panther were 1-for-10
  • Sophomore Brian McGrath (Worcester, Mass.) stopped 45 shots for the Falcons 
  • Morelli made 32 saves for the Panthers, for his 10th win of the season
