Murphy nets first collegiate hat trick for Fitchburg State in MASCAC victory

Salem Mass. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team defeated the Vikings of Salem State University, 3-1 this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Rockett Ice Arena.

How It Happened

Following a scoreless first period, Fitchburg State grabbed the lead at the 5:01 mark of the second frame when sophomore Ryan Murphy (Wayzata, Minn.) collected a feed from senior Christopher Vicario (Cranston, R.I.) and freshman Rece Bergeman (Newark, Del.) and found the back of the net for his second tally on the season for the 1-0 edge.

The Falcons doubled their margin (2-0) roughly three and half minutes later as Murphy notched his second marker of the contest off assists from sophomores Kyle Klatt (Cloquet, Minn.) and Patrick Sullivan (Yorktown, N.Y).

The Green and Gold upped its advantage with just under seven minutes left in the second period with Murphy connecting on his third score of the game as Bergeman and junior Jordin Holmes (Willow Grove, Penn.) assisting on the play to make the score 3-0.

Salem State broke its scoring silence at the 11:56 mark of the third period when freshman Connor Woolley (Poghquag, N.Y.) settled a pass from classmates Michael Shippee (Seattle, Wash.) and Valtteri Tanninen (Helsinki, Finland) and connected on his first collegiate tally resulting in the 3-1 final.
