Ice Hockey Topped By Greyhounds In Non-Conference Action

 

Bauvais and Dunn net first collegiate goals for Green and Gold

Fitchburg, Mass. The Fitchburg State ice hockey team dropped a 5-3 decision to the Greyhounds of Assumption College this evening in non-conference action from the Wallace Civic Center.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State opened the scoring at the 5:33 mark of the first period when freshman Alexandre Bauvais (Meldon, France) deposited a shot inside the near post for his first collegiate tally as junior Toivo Kramer (New York, NY) and graduate student Antoine Gignac (Quebec City, QUE) assisted on the play for the 1-0 margin.

The Falcons doubled the lead (2-0) two minutes later as freshman Hunter Dunn (Douglas, MA) received a feed from sophomore Nolan Sargent (Littleton, CO) and found the back of the net for his first collegiate marker.

Assumption answered midway through the frame with freshman Jack Lafontaine (Windsor, CT) converting a power play goal for his third tally on the year with assists from junior Ronny Paragallo (Huntington, NY) and newcomer Nick Demio (Duxbury, MA) to cut the lead to 2-1.

In the middle stanza, the Greyhounds knotted the contest at 2-2 40 seconds into the stanza as freshman Leo Piandes (Arlington, MA) tucked a shot into the right side of the net for his seventh score of the 2023-24 campaign off assists from Paragallo and junior John Woernle (Wellesley Hills, MA).

Fitchburg State regained the lead three minutes later when junior Oliver Cookson (Sheffield, MA) received a feed from Gignac and Kramer and put a shot into the right side of the net for his first marker on the year for the 3-2 edge.

The Greyhounds retied the contest (3-3) 1:50 into the third period with sophomore Ryan Decker (Southborough, MA) netting his seventh goal of the season as freshmen Jonathan Surrette (Woburn, MA) and Patrick McKiernan (Glastonbury, CT)) assisting on the play.

The visitors grabbed the lead at the 6:41 mark as Decker gathered a feed from Woernle and graduate student Shane Sullivan (Holden, MA) and proceeded to deposit a shot inside the left post for his second marker of the contest for the 4-3 edge.

The Greyhounds secured the victory with 41 seconds remaining a=when Surrette notched an empty netter, resulting in the 5-3 final.
