Endicott Strikes Past Fitchburg State, 2-0

Carey collects four saves in Falcons setback

BEVERLY, Mass. (October 28, 2008) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team fell to Endicott College, 2-0, in non-conference action this evening at Endicott Stadium.

Sophomore Joseph Ryan (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) scored a pair of goals to lead Endicott College to its sixth victory of the season, while senior Kyle Schmutte (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) aided the Gulls with an assist.

Endicott started the scoring in the 19th minute of the match as Ryan gathered a loose ball inside the box and buried a shot to the right post for a 1-0 lead. Junior TJ Sapienza (Milford, N.H./Milford) crossed the ball into Schmutte who redirected the feed to Ryan for the first score of the game.

Fitchburg State battled the remainder of the first half, totaling five shots on net. The Falcons had their best scoring opportunity midway through the opening frame, forcing a two-on-one situation, only to have their offensive efforts stopped by freshman Christopher Serpa (Bristol, R.I./Bristol).

Fitchburg State stepped up its pressure in the second half, forcing sophomore goalkeeper Jack DeJesus (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott) to make several big saves. The Falcons threatened midway through the period, testing DeJesus with a cross to his right and forcing the net-minder to make a diving save to keep Gulls on top, 1-0.

Endicott added a late second half goal to secure its victory. The Gulls held a slight 11-10 advantage in shots, while posting a 3-2 advantage in corner attempts. Junior Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) kept the Falcons within striking with a four save, complete game effort, while DeJesus totaled five saves for the Gulls.

Fitchburg State (4-11-1, 0-5-1 MASCAC) is back in action on Saturday as it travels to Framingham State at 12 p.m. Endicott College (6-11-1, 5-7-1 TCCC) will now wait to see if its record will be good enough to earn a berth into the TCCC postseason this coming weekend.
