Fitchburg State Battles Westfield State To 0-0 Draw

Carey leads Falcons with a career-high 11 saves

WESTFIELD, Mass. (October 11, 2008) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw with conference foe Westfield State College in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference this afternoon.

Fitchburg State battled in the first half with four total shots, including senior captain Dave Tyler's (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) shot on net that pressured Westfield State's senior goalie Mike Thompson (Feeding Hills, Mass.). Thompson came up with the save to quiet the Falcons offense.

In the second half, Westfield State pressured the Falcon defense with 12 total shots in the period, but junior goaltender Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) collected seven second half saves to keep the score even at 0-0.

After one scoreless overtime period, Fitchburg State look to end the game in the second extra frame, but the Falcons could not capitalize on two looks on net. The Owls out-shot the Falcons 22-10 in the contest with a 7-3 advantage in corners. Carey registered a career-high 11 saves between the pipes for Fitchburg State while Thompson had four stops for Westfield.

Fitchburg State (4-6-1, 0-3-1 MASCAC) is back in action on Wednesday as it hosts WPI at 7 p.m. Westfield State (5-4-2, 1-1-2 MASCAC) will host Trinity College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
