Carey stops three shots in Falcons non-conference setback

MANSFIELD, Conn. (October 28, 2009) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team suffered a tough non-conference setback, falling to Eastern Connecticut State University, 3-0 his evening.

Senior Matt Carey made three saves in the Falcons
non-conference tilt with Eastern Connecticut.

Eastern Connecticut's Maxim Fantl (West Hartford, Conn./West Hartford) scored his team-leading 15th goal of the season to give the Warriors a quick lead in the 13th minute and assisted on the final goal midway through the second half to clinch Eastern's eighth consecutive victory.

The Warriors opened the contest with three scoring opportunities in the first seven minutes, but could not capitalize until Fantl stole the ball in Eastern's offensive end, took two touches, and connected with 12 minutes expired.

Freshman Cory Tobler (Portland, Conn./Portland) made it 2-0 three minutes before the end of the first half. Eastern's Aaron Smiles (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) sent a corner kick from the left side and Tobler executed a one-time blast from the top of the box to beat senior keeper Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell).

Eastern Connecticut capped its scoring midway through the second half as Fantl totaled his sixth assist of the season when he found Matt Furman (Montville, Conn./Montville) in the box on a cross from the end line.

Warrior keeper Carl Appel (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor) made two saves before leaving early in the second half.  Fitchburg State junior Lionso Ventura (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) test Appel early on, lacing a shot near the right post, but Appel made a diving save to preserve the shutout. Carey stopped three shots in net for the Falcons.
