Falcons end regular season with heart-breaking loss to Rams

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 31, 2009) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team suffered a season-ending loss, falling to Framingham State College, 3-2 in MASCAC action this afternoon.

Junior Robbie Pacini netted the Falcons
first goal of the game this afternoon.

With the loss, Fitchburg State remains one game shy of the MASCAC playoffs and concludes its season with an overall record of 6-8-2 (2-3-1 MASCAC). Framingham State ends its regular season with an 8-8-2 record (5-1-1 MASCAC), and currently awaits its pairing for the MASCAC Tournament.

Both teams opened the contest with high-flying action in the first period, registering 12 shots and four goals in the opening 33 minutes. Framingham State got on the board first as the junior duo of Scott Faria (Fall River, Mass./Durfee) and Jason Silva (Northbridge, Mass./Milford) teamed up for a Rams goal at the nine minute mark. Faria connected for his team-leading eighth score of the season off a one-time pass from Silva in the middle of the box.

Fitchburg State rallied back quickly, answering with back-to-back scores over a 2:11 span to take a 2-1 lead. Junior Robbie Pacini (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) knotted the score at 1-1 with his second marker of the season in the 13th minute of the match, while classmate Lionso Ventura (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) put the Falcons up by one with a successful header from a Trevor Higgins' (Kittery Point, Maine/Traip Academy) dish.

Later in the period, Framingham State responded offensively as junior Brunno Goncalves (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) netted the game's equalizer off Peter Maranto's (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) assist. Goncalves took Maranto's feed from 40 yards away, attacked the right side of the box and slipped the ball past Falcon keeper Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) to bring the game to a 2-2 standstill at the break.

In the second half, the game's tempo slowed down as Fitchburg State was hampered by a red card late in the first period. Playing down a man for the final 45 minutes, the Falcons controlled Framingham State's 11 shot attack, holding off the Rams until Faria found the back of the net for his second tally in the 61st minute. Faria connected with Silva again, netting his ninth goal of the year and sealing the Rams eight victory of the season.

Framingham State out-shot the Falcons 20-9 in the contest with a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Carey registered six saves in his final collegiate contest, while junior Greg Halle (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) stopped one shot in net for the Rams.
