Mascary nets a pair in Falcons second victory of the season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 6, 2009) - Sophomore Kevin Mascary (N. Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) notched a pair of goals as Fitchburg State blanked Johnson and Wales University, 3-0 in non-conference action this evening.

KEVIN MASCARY

After a fairly silent first half, Fitchburg State kicked up its offensive intensity early in the second frame, rifling off 11 shots in the period with seven attempts on net. Mascary sparked the Falcons momentum, registering the game's first goal midway through the period. The sophomore midfielder gave Fitchburg State the 1-0 edge, taking a Brian Mountain (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) helper and slipping past the right side of Wildcat keeper, Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J./Freehold).

The Falcons continued its offensive pursuit moments later as Kane and Mascary connected for back-to-back scores to give Fitchburg State a 3-0 cushion. Kane kick-started the scoring splurge with an on target header off Robbie Pacini's (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) corner kick, while Mascary sealed the victory with his second marker off junior Joseph Daigle's (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) rebound.

The Johnson and Wales offense was kept silent throughout the contest as Fitchburg State received solid defensive performances by senior Pat Higgins (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) and sophomore Brian Bettencourt (Norton, Mass./Norton) . The Falcons limited the Wildcats to only 13 shots in the contest, while transitioning nicely with 19 shots of their own.

Senior Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) registered his second shutout of the season, posting ten saves between the pipes for the Falcons, while Ferraro collected six stops for the Wildcats.

Fitchburg State (2-6-2, 0-2-1 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it hosts Westfield State College at 11 a.m. Johnson and Wales (2-7-0, 2-1-0 GNAC) will travel to Bridgewater State College on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
