Falcons collect second shutout of the week paced by foot of Ventura

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 17, 2009) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team collected its second shutout of the week, downing Mass-Maritime Academy, 2-0 in MASCAC action this afternoon.

Junior Lionso Ventura netted a pair of goals in the
Falcons 2-0 victory this afternoon.

Fitchburg State junior Lionso Ventura (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) led the Falcons offensive front with a pair of goals in the contest, while junior Joseph Daigle (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) and sophomore Kevin Mascary (N. Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) chipped in with one assist each.

Mass-Maritime opened the first period with an offensive scurry, totaling three shots on target in the first minute of play, but a team-save by the Falcons and two stops by senior keeper Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) kept the score at a 0-0 deadlock. The Falcons threatened late in the half but Mascary's blast off the ensuring corner kick was blocked by the Buccaneers to keep the game scoreless.

In the second half, Fitchburg State continued its offensive momentum, opening the half with two-consecutive shots on net. Ventura gave the Falcons an early 1-0 edge, taking a Daigle helper and connecting from the right channel for his fourth goal of the season. Less than eight minutes later, Ventura found the back of the net again, taking a Mascary helper up the left-sideline and slipping it past Bucs' keeper Taylor Wyman (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Duncan Fletcher) for a 2-0 lead.

Fitchburg State received solid defensive efforts from its back line as sophomore Brian Bettencourt (Norton, Mass./Norton), senior Dan Powers (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) and classmate Patrick Higgins (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) aided Carey in the Falcons second shutout of the year. Carey was solid between the pipes, totaling nine saves in the complete game effort, while Wyman notched three stops for the Buccaneers.

Fitchburg State (4-7-2, 1-3-1 MASCAC) will be in action again on Wednesday as it hosts Becker College at 4 p.m. Mass-Maritime (5-7-1, 0-5-0 MASCAC) will host Wentworth on Thursday at 7 p.m.
