Fitchburg State Blanked By Roger Williams, 4-0

Falcons to meet Ithaca College in consolation round tomorrow at 11 a.m.

BRISTOL, R.I. (September 5, 2009) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2009 season as it fell to Roger Williams University, 4-0 in the first round of the Roger Williams Classic this afternoon.

Roger Williams rookie Bradley MacDonald (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet) led all scorers with a  game-high three points on one goal and one assist, while classmate Billy Kissane (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), freshman Michael Quintanilla (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and junior Kevin Hand (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) added one scored apiece.

The Hawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first half of play as Kissane netted his first goal of the season in the 18th minute. Senior captain Justin Plourde (Concord, N.H./Concord) set up the eventual game-winner with a long pass from just outside the box and Kissane deposited it with a short kick, giving Roger Williams the one goal edge.

In the second half, Roger Williams continued its offensive pressure, taking a three goal lead with under 15 minutes to play. Hand struck first in the 66th minute as he connected on a corner kick, while MacDonald followed with shifty move on Falcon keeper Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell). The Hawks added a late insurance goal in the closing seconds to secure their second victory of the season.

The Fitchburg State offense was kept at bay all day, as the Hawks limited the Falcons to only six shots in the contest. Roger Williams enjoyed a 6-4 advantage in corners, while out-shooting the Falcons 20-6 throughout the match. Carey turned in a complete game, four save performance for Fitchburg State, while junior Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) posted two stops for his second shutout of the season.

Fitchburg State (1-1, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action tomorrow as it competes in the consolation round of the Classic vs. Ithaca College at 11 a.m. Roger Williams (2-0, 0-0 TCCC) will battle Plymouth State tomorrow for the Classic Championship at 1:30 p.m.
