Carey stops nine in Falcons MASCAC setback
FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 10, 2009) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team suffered its third conference loss of the season, falling to Westfield State College, 2-0 in MASCAC action this afternoon.

Westfield State collected its third MASCAC victory of the season as the highly offensive affair witnessed a combined 44 shots. In the scoreless first half alone, both teams create ample opportunities with the Owls holding a slim 13-10 advantage in targets. Fitchburg State notched two scoring opportunities late in the half, but the Falcons saw sophomore Trevor Higgins' (Kittery Point, Maine/Traip Academy) header sail high and freshman Richie Harvey's (Monson, Mass./Monson) shot get denied.
In the second half, Westfield State received an offensive boost from the duo of freshman Jared Spicer (Carver, Mass./Carver) and sophomore Kyle Yelin (Southwick, Mass./Southwick) as the two combined for a pair of Owl scores. Spicer put Westfield State on top 1-0 early in the half, notching his first collegiate goal in the 56th minute, while Spicer gave the Owls a two goal cushion with his fourth tally of the year at the 77:29 mark.
Both teams brought their offensive firepower with Westfield State holding a 26-18 advantage in shots. The Falcons registered eight, second-half shots, including two on net, but senior keeper Lucas Dexter (Acushnet, Mass./Fairhaven) denied Fitchburg State any scoring chances with four saves and his third shutout of the season. Senior Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) made nine saves in net for the Falcons.
Fitchburg State (2-7-2, 0-3-1 MASCAC) will be in action again on Thursday as it visits WPI at 7 p.m. Westfield State (5-6-1, 3-1-0 MASCAC) will host Worcester State College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
