Falcons collect stunning non-conference victory led by markers from Kane and Bolam

WORCESTER, Mass. (October 15, 2009) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team shut down NEWMAC powerhouse WPI this evening, posting a convincing 2-0 victory at Alumni Field.

Freshman Dennis Kane netted his third
goal of the season to lift the Falcons
past WPI.

Freshman Dennis Kane (Monson, Mass./Monson) and sophomore Danny Bolam (Fletcher, Vt./BFA Airfax) registered one score apiece to lead the Fitchburg State offensive attack, while senior goalkeeper Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) notched eight saves to pace the Falcons defensively.

Fitchburg State grabbed the early edge, taking a 1-0 lead on Kane's third goal of the season. The Falcons started the scoring transition from their own defensive end and drew WPI goalkeeper Paul Moan (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) out of the net, leaving Kane with an open goal for the first score of the game.

In the second half, WPI created several scoring attempts, registering five shots on net and three corner kicks in the opening 25 minutes of the frame.  The Engineers pressured the Falcons initially, but Fitchburg State responded with its second goal of the contest in the 75th minute as Bolam netted his third marker of the year. After a series of WPI corner kicks, Fitchburg State sent the ball down to its offensive end, setting up Bolam's blast from 18 yards out for a Falcon insurance goal.

WPI out-shot Fitchburg State 14-8 in the contest, but the Falcons finished its scoring opportunities, totaling a .667 shot on goal percentage. In net, Moan recorded one stop for the Engineers, while Carey turned in a complete game-effort for his first shutout of the season.
