Becker Doubles Down Fitchburg State, 2-0
Ivanov registers two saves in Falcons non-conference loss
LEICESTER, Mass. (October 6, 2010) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team fell to Becker College, 2-0 in non-conference action this afternoon at Alumni Field.

Becker opened the contest firing strong as the Hawks registered their first scoring opportunity in the 16th minute. Junior Aldo Karkanjozi (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights) came within inches of giving the Hawks an early 1-0 edge on a penalty kick opportunity but his kick sailed over the crossbar to keep the game a 0-0 deadlock.
Late in the period, the Hawks broke the game's scoring silence, capitalizing on a Fitchburg State misfortune for a 1-0 lead. With 2:08 remaining in the first half, the Fitchburg State defense posted an own goal, giving the Hawks a one goal edge at the break.
Becker increased its lead to 2-0 early in the second half as sophomore Ryan Singh (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont) threaded a beautiful pass to Karkanjozi, who ripped a shot to the back of the net. Karkanjozi rifled the ball past the dive of Fitchburg State goalie Alex Ivanov (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) to notch his team-leading third goal of the season.
The contest saw minimal offensive action with only 14 combined shots in the contest. Becker posted an 8-6 margin in shots, while Fitchburg State held a slim 5-4 lead in corner kicks. Ivanov led the Falcons defensive efforts with two saves despite the loss while Becker goalkeeper Tim McDonald (Holden, Mass./Holden) made three saves to earn his third shutout of the season.
Fitchburg State (1-9-0, 0-3-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Mass-Maritime at 12 p.m. Becker (6-4-1, 1-0-0 NECC) will travel to Newbury on Saturday at 2 p.m.
