Westfield State Tops Fitchburg State, 2-0

Ivanov stops four shots in complete game effort for Falcons

WESTFIELD, Mass. (October 2, 2010) – Senior Alex Ivanov (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) posted four saves in net this evening but Fitchburg State fell to Westfield State, 2-0 in MASCAC action at Alumni Field.

Westfield State got on the board first early in the contest and never looked back as the Owls registered their second league victory of the year. Kyle Yelin (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) led Westfield State with three points on the night, while Justin Laliberte (Easthampton, Mass./Easthampton) also added a marker.

The Owls opened the scoring just 4:10 into the contest as Yelin connected for his third goal of the season off a Josh Severns (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) feed. Westfield doubled its lead later in the period as Laliberte found the back of the net for his second goal of the year, using a Yelin assist.

The score remained the same throughout the entire second half even with Westfield State registering nine shots in the frame. The Owls captured a 14-9 advantage in shots for the game, while posting a 7-2 margin in corner kicks. Owl goaltender Jeff Pepoli (Ashburnham/Cushing Academy) registered four saves in the complete game victory for Westfield State, while Ivanov collected four stops despite the loss for the Falcons.          

Fitchburg State (1-8-0, 0-3-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Wednesday as it travels to Becker College at 4 p.m. Westfield State (7-3-0, 2-1-0 MASCAC) will host Trinity College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
