UMass Boston Scores Overs Fitchburg State, 5-3

Wansi, Mascary and Bordonaro all net scores for the Falcons

BOSTON, Mass. (September 15, 2011) – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team registered a season-high three goals this evening, but fell to the UMass Boston Beacons, 5-3 in non-conference action at Clark Athletic Center Field.

UMass Boston got on the board early, posting a 1-0 lead just 5:44 into the match as a header from sophomore Stefanos Galouzis (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season. Fitchburg State answered right back however, knotting the score 1-1 just six minutes later as freshman Franck Wansi (Lynn, Mass./Lynn English) connected for his first collegiate goal.

The first half remained a back-and-forth affair over the opening 25 minutes with both teams trading scores. UMass Boston used another score from Galouzis and tally from junior Victor Hugo Costa (Malden, Mass./Medford) to post a 3-2 advantage at the break, but a goal from Falcon senior, Kevin Mascary (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) kept Fitchburg State within striking distance.

UMass Boston extended its lead early in the second half, as Reyn Johnson (Mangilao, Guam/St. John's School) lifted the Beacons to a 4-2 margin with his second goal of the season. Fitchburg State crept back into the match with a marker from sophomore Carmen Bordonaro (Saugus, Mass./Saugus), but a Douglas Silviera (Revere, Mass./Watertown) goal in the 67th minute sealed the 5-3 victory for the Beacons.

The Beacons out-shot the Falcons, 22-13 for the contest, including a commanding 12-3 advantage in the first half. Senior Patrick Harper (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) collected his first collegiate start this afternoon for the Falcons, totaling five saves despite the loss, while Beacon goalkeeper Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) stopped six shots in the victory.

Fitchburg State (0-5-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Salem State University at 12 p.m. UMass Boston (4-0-0, 0-0-0 LEC) will play host to Keene State College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
