Fitchburg State Nipped By Daniel Webster, 3-2

Pereira and Neves pace Falcons in non-conference setback

NASHUA, N.H. (October 18, 2012) – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team traveled to Daniel Webster College this afternoon and suffered a 3-2 loss at the hand of the Eagles in non-conference action.

Senior Jason Pereira (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) and freshman Matheus Neves (Everett, Mass./Everett) paced the Falcons with one goal apiece, while Eliot Kilgore (Milford, N.H./Milford) notched a pair of markers for the home squad.

Fitchburg State opened with the lead just 0:58 into the match as Pereira found the back of the net for his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Daniel Webster march right back, taking a 2-1 advantage into the intermission as Kilgore connected for back-to-back markers over a 2:42 span. The senior striker netted his first goal of the contest at the 15:01 mark, before giving the Eagles the lead at 17:43.

In the second half, the Falcons answered, using a score from Neves in the 62nd minute to knot the score at 2-2. The Eagles would answer last however, scoring in the 83rd minute to clinch a 3-2 win. Richie Moore (Milford, N.H./Milford) collected the game-winning tally for Daniel Webster, using a feed from Brad Hosey (Salem, N.H./Salem).

Shots were at a minimum throughout the contest, as play remained steady between the 20's. Fitchburg State and Daniel Webster each targeted the net eight times, while the Eagles held a slim lead in corner kicks, 5-4. In net, sophomore Aidan Hanratty (E. Bridgewater, Mass./E. Bridgewater) totaled three saves for the Falcons, while Eagle net minder Sal Santa Maria (Thomaston, Conn./Thomaston) posted a pair of stops for the hosts.

Fitchburg State (4-9-2, 1-4-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it hosts Worcester State University at 10 a.m. Daniel Webster (4-9-2, 2-3-0 NECC) will visit Newbury College next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
