Fitchburg State Takes Down Regis, 3-1

Pereira collects five point day in Falcons non-conference victory

WESTON, Mass. (September 26, 2012) – Senior Jason Pereira (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) netted a pair of goals and added an assist in a five point day as the Fitchburg State men's soccer team defeated host, Regis College, 3-1 this evening.

Fitchburg State struck first as junior Kenneth Kelly (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable) found a streaking Pereira down the middle of the field, who took one-on-one opportunity and connected, giving the Falcons an early 1-0 lead just seven minutes into the match. The Falcons padded their lead (2-0) when Pereira teamed up with George Sullivan (Milton, Mass./Milton), who hit home for his second goal of the season.

Regis entered the scoring column with just over 15 minutes remaining in the first period as the Falcons were called for a foul inside the box. Steve Tavares (Bellingham, Mass.) stepped to the line and buried his tenth goal of the season to cut the deficit in half before the break.

The Pride tried to find the equalizer early as Kenny Charron (West Warwick, R.I.) took three shots on goal that were all turned away by Falcon keeper Aidan Hanratty (E. Bridgewater, Mass./E. Bridgewater). Renato Rosas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) added two shots in the stretch that were saved and blocked as well as the score remained 2-1 through the opening eight minutes of the second frame.

After a pair of off-side calls against the Falcons, Fitchburg State finally got one through as Carmen Bordonaro (Saugus, Mass.) received a pass that left him one-on-one with the new Regis net minder. Bordonaro flicked the ball over the keeper and found Pereira in front of an open net for his second tally of the game.

Regis outshot the Falcons at a 12-4 clip in the second half and held a 19-16 advantage for the game. Hanratty improved to 2-5-1 on the year, making six saves in the complete game effort, while Campbell suffered the setback for the Pride.

Fitchburg State (2-6-1, 0-1-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Mass-Maritime Academy at 12 p.m. Regis (3-8-0, 1-1-0 NECC) will hit the field again next Wednesday as it hosts Anna Maria at 5 p.m.
