UMass Boston Upends Fitchburg State, 4-2

Kelly and Pereira net single markers in Falcons non-conference setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 13, 2012) –Fitchburg State battled the visiting Beacons of UMass Boston this evening, falling 4-2 in non-conference, men's soccer action at Elliot Field.

UMass Boston took an early lead through the half time intermission, scoring one goal on eight shots in the first frame. Junior Stefanos Galouzis (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) found the back of the net in the 20th minute of the match for the Beacons, taking a feed from senior Reyn Johnson (Mangilao, Guam/Saint John's) for his first goal season.

In the second half, Fitchburg State quickly knotted the score (1-1) as sophomore James David (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) crossed the ball from the right side and connected with senior Jason Pereira (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) who hit home for his first goal of the season in the 55th minute.

UMass answered immediately, netting a goal off a corner kick just 3:47 later as senior Brian Sanz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Framingham) picked up a deflection off a Falcon defender and buried the go-ahead marker for a 2-1 advantage.  Another ricochet score by sophomore Douglas Silviera (Revere, Mass./Northeast Metro) and a 2-on-1 score by John Destefano (Auburn, N.H./Manchester Memorial) capped the scoring for Beacons with a 4-1 margin.

The Falcons added a goal later in the second half as junior Kenneth Kelly's (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable) converted a successful penalty kick in the 87th minute, but time ran out on the Fitchburg State comeback with UMass Boston holding on to the 4-2 victory.

For the contest, UMass Boston held a 17-9 advantage in shots and a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Aidan Hanratty (E. Bridgewater, Mass./E. Bridgewater) collected six saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while senior Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) stopped two shots in the victory for the Beacons.

Fitchburg State (1-3-1, 0-0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Bridgewater State at 6 p.m. UMass Boston (2-2-1, 0-0-0 LEC) will visit Keene State College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
