Fitchburg State Gets Clipped By Westfield State, 2-1

Pereira nets PK in the 58th minute for Falcons lone score

WESTFIELD, Mass. (September 22, 2012) – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team suffered another close MASCAC setback this afternoon, falling to the Owls of Westfield State University, 2-1 on the road. 

The Owls improved to 2-0-0 in the MASCAC and 3-3-1 overall, while Fitchburg State falls to 0-0-2 in the league and 1-6-1 on the season.

Westfield State used a two-goal, first half, posting a pair of perfectly executed plays with double assists on both scores. Owls senior Bill Lund (Monson) assisted on both goals, connecting with Jared Spicer (Carver) and Kristian Driscoll (Lexington) for Westfield State's first goal of the game. The Owls scored the game-winning goal with 14 seconds remaining in the first half as Dave Anderson (Springfield/Sabis) scored on a breakaway up the middle, following assists from Jon Principato (Stoneham) and Lund.

Fitchburg State broke its scoring silence in the 58th minute on a penalty kick by Jason Pereira (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington). The PK was awarded after an Owl handball in the box.

For the contest, Westfield State outshot Fitchburg State, 15-3 with Falcon goalie Aiden Hanratty (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) recording seven saves. Westfield State goalie Kris Carrington (Agawam) had three saves on the afternoon for the complete victory. 

Fitchburg State (1-6-1, 0-1-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Wednesday as it visits Regis College at 5 p.m. Westfield State (3-3-1, 2-0-0 MASCAC) visits Endicott College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
