Fitchburg State Flies Past Daniel Webster, 2-0

Hanratty extends streak to 975 minutes with three saves in contest  

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 16, 2013) – Junior Aidan Hanratty (E. Bridgwater, Mass.) extended his current shutout streak to 975 minutes as the Fitchburg State men's soccer team blanked the Eagles of Daniel Webster College, 2-0 in non-conference action this evening.

With the victory, Fitchburg State improves to 6-4-4 (1-0-3 MASCAC) while Daniel Webster falls to 7-7-1 on the year (2-3-0 NECC).

After a scoreless first half of play which witnessed much possession between the 20's, Fitchburg State opened its offense early in the second half, scoring a pair of markers within the first six minutes of the stanza.

Freshman Mauro Gimenez (Fitchburg, Mass.) put the Falcons on the board in the 47th minute of the contest, taking a solid pass from sophomore Tom Sorrentino (West Haven, Conn.) for a one-on-one attempt with the Eagles keeper. Gimenez beat the keeper to the right side to notch his team-leading sixth score of the season.

Moments later the Falcons doubled their lead as senior Carmen Borndonaro (Saugus, Mass.) connected for his third goal of the season, using a feed down the near sideline from Sorrentino for the 2-0 advantage.

For the game, Fitchburg State out-shot Daniel Webster, 21-7 while also commanding the corner attempts with a 3-1 margin. In net, Hanratty remains eighth all-time among the NCAA Division III shutout leaders, totaling three saves in a complete game effort this evening. For the Eagles, freshman Ryan Flaherty (Manorville, N.Y.) made his collegiate debut in net, notching eight saves over 90 minutes of work.

Fitchburg State will be back in action on Saturday as it visits Framingham State at 12 p.m. Daniel Webster will host New England College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
