Sixth-seeded Falcons fall to third-seeded Bears to conclude 2013 season

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (November 5, 2013) – Third-seeded Bridgewater State University collected a 2-0 victory over sixth-seeded Fitchburg State University in opening round action of the 2013 MASCAC Men's Soccer tournament this afternoon.

With the victory, the Bears improve to 8-7-3 on the season and advance to semifinal round action of the tournament at second-seeded Framingham State University this Friday afternoon. Fitchburg State concludes its 2013 campaign with an overall record of 6-8-5 and a 1-2-4 mark in the MASCAC.

Bridgewater State registered both of its markers in the first half with a goal by Kolin Campbell (Norton, Mass.) in the 18th minute and tally from David Wilson (Charlton, Mass.) in the 36th minute. The Bears opened with a flurry, posting 16 shots in the first half, including eight on net. Campbell put the Bears on top early with his second scored of the season as he finished a header off a Nicholas Keddie (Abington, Mass.) throw in from the sideline.

The Bears increased their leader just 18 minutes later as Wilson connected for his second goal of the season with an unassisted tally. The senior forward broke loose with a one-on-one opportunity against junior goalkeeper Aidan Hanratty (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) and his shot ricocheted off the Falcon net-minder into the left corner for a 2-0 advantage.

In the second, neither team was able to find the back of the net as the Bears turned to a possessions style offense. Shot opportunities evened with the Bears holding a slim 9-5 margin, but ten corner attempts by Bridgewater State kept the ball in the Bears offensive end.

For the game, Bridgewater State controlled the pace, out-shooting Fitchburg State 25-7 in the contest and posting a commanding 14-0 margin in corner kicks. In net, Matt Bagley (Braintree, Mass.) earned the victory for the Bears, posting three saves in the complete game effort, while Hanratty stopped 12 shots for the Falcons.
