Fitchburg State Falls Short to MCLA, 2-1

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts defeated Fitchburg State University, 2-1 in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's soccer tilt on Saturday evening at Elliot Field. Sophomore forward Anthony Basile scored both goals for the Trailblazers in the victory.

Basile netted the first tally of the match on a volley at the 31:43 mark when junior midfielder Tyler Vona made a cross from the corner to give the away side a 1-0 lead that would stick through halftime.

Fitchburg State brought the game even at 1-1 when senior forward Simon Vikoler put in his fifth of the season on a feed from Steven Martinez at 58:40. The score would last for twenty minutes until Basile put in his second of the night when he snuck past the Falcons defense and beat senior net minder Aidan Hanratty to the right side for the eventual game-winner (2-1).

Despite outshooting the opposing side 21-13, Fitchburg State fell short in their comeback attempt and were unable to muster a second equalizer despite several opportunities.

Hanratty finished with six saves, while his counterpart Matt Robinson had ten stops in the win for the Trailblazers.

The Green and Gold (5-5, 1-2 MASCAC) will return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 8 as they travel to Buckingham Browne & Nichols to take on Lesley University at 8:00 pm. MCLA (5-4, 2-1 MASCAC) will travel to SUNYIT on Tuesday, October 7 at 6:00 pm.
